OUR COMMISSIONERS

ABOUT LMPS

The Lesotho Mounted Police Service was established on the 26th October 1872 and it was known as Basutoland Mounted with the strength of 110 men who were mainly the sons of local chiefs. The magistrates also served as police officers.

The police duties were mainly to support and protect magistrates and to act as interpreters and messengers.

Major R.W. Booth is the first recorded Commissioner of Police.

Major General A. Namoli is the first black person to lead the Police.

Major General L. Dingizwayo was a powerful leader for 5 years.

Mr Jonas Malewa was one of the most influential commissioners in 2000

Mr Khothatso Tsooana became the youngest Commissioner at 36yrs.

Mr. Holomo Molibeli took reigns and transformed the service greatly.
