Chen Wei (29), Yang Xiong Kang (40), Chen Ming Wu (41), all from Fujian, China, residing in Katlehong, Maseru, and Kemong Masupha (44) of Ha Abia, Maseru, who is employed in the Ministry of Trade, appeared before the Maseru Magistrate’s Court on June 16, 2026. They are charged with illicit manufacturing and trafficking of drugs, illegal manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, and environmental pollution caused by drugs.
The accused have been remanded in custody at the Correctional Services facility after failing to meet their bail conditions, which were set at M5,000.00 in cash and a surety bond of M50,000.00 (or property of equivalent value) per person. The court also ordered them to surrender their travel documents (passports) to the court. They are scheduled to reappear in court on June 30, 2026.
Speaking to Woman Police Constable (W/P/C) Makeabetsoe Mohloboli from the Patrol Services in Maseru, she revealed that her department received a tip-off in March 2026. The information pointed to a suspected factory operating illegally to manufacture drugs at Lifariking, Khubetsoana, in the Berea district.
She stated that the police rushed to the scene and were astonished to uncover such a factory. Inside, police found illicit drugs along with equipment and raw materials used to manufacture them.
W/P/C Mohloboli indicated that police laboratory tests have confirmed the substances to be Crystal Meth and Methcathinone. The suspects were immediately placed in handcuffs after failing to provide a lawful explanation for the business operations at the site. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of the Maseru Urban District, Kokong Malefane, has appealed to drug users and traffickers to reject the use and trade of illegal substances due to their devastating consequences.
He expressed his gratitude to the whistleblowers who provided the tip-off and urged the public to remain patient and cooperative while the police continue with their ongoing investigations.
