POLICE REPORTS OF 16/06/2026

Mafeteng

‘Matšepo Mabusela, a 55-year-old woman from Thaba-Tšoeu, Ha Khabo, appeared before the Mafeteng Magistrate Court on 11 June, 2026. She was charged with the unlawful possession of a .357 Magnum firearm and seven rounds of ammunition. Found guilty as charged, she was sentenced to four years in prison or a fine of M12,000.00, which she paid. Her conviction followed her arrest at her home on 10 June, 2026.

Botha-Bothe

    1. A 13-year-old boy from Botha-Bothe appeared before the Botha-Bothe Magistrate Court on 11 June, 2026, accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl on 6 August, 2025. He was found guilty and committed to the Juvenile Training Centre (JTC). The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) appeals to parents, guardians, and caregivers—including teachers—to talk to children about behavioral issues that can destroy their futures. Preventing criminal activity and subsequent convictions avoids the tragedy of children missing school to serve sentences.
    2. A 45-year-old man from Ha Malofo is in police custody, suspected of sexually abusing a 49-year-old man with a mental disability from the same village. According to the report, the suspect went to the victim’s home on 11 June, 2026, at around 2000hrs to ask about the whereabouts of a neighbor. The victim, who was already in bed, stated he did not know. The suspect then claimed he was tired and wanted to rest, got into the victim’s bed, and sexually abused him until roughly 0400hrs. Before leaving, the suspect ordered the victim not to tell anyone. However, the victim recounted the incident to a visiting relative on 13 June, 2026, and the matter was reported to the police. The suspect will appear in court once investigations are complete.

Quthing

Mojalefa Letele, a 49-year-old man from Ha Sikara, Lower Moyeni, appeared before the Quthing Magistrate Court on 11 June, 2026. He was charged with sexually assaulting three 22-year-old men from Phamong, Mohale’s Hoek, Ha Kelebone, and Makhalong, Mphaki.

The suspect and the complainants were all inmates at the Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS) sharing the same holding cell. The incidents occurred over several days. The report indicates that the suspect groped the victims, applied Vaseline, and digitally penetrated them while they slept. All three victims woke up during the assaults.

The suspect is currently awaiting trial at LCS, where he was already being detained for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor. He is scheduled to reappear in court on 24 June  2026.

Police Headquarters (PHQ)

Two police constables have been dismissed from the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) following their involvement in criminal activities:

  1. Mohloki William Lekhanya (47)of Matukeng, Leribe. Deployed at the Maputsoe Police Post, he had served in the LMPS since 2003.
  2. Salemone Sekonyela (33)of Tena-Baphehi, Tlokoeng, Mokhotlong. Stationed at the Leribe Police Station (Hlotse), he joined the service in 2016.

Lekhanya was accused of sexually abusing his daughter. The LMPS condemned the act as despicable, noting that it severely tarnished the institution’s integrity and eroded public trust. Lekhanya was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison without the option of a fine.

Sekonyela’s dismissal stems from an incident in November 2025. Upon learning that two men and a woman wanted to buy mercury, Sekonyela and a friend traveled to meet them using the friend’s “4+1” taxi. When they arrived, they forced the victims into the vehicle and drove to a remote location. There, they assaulted the victims with a gun and a whip, demanding money, and robbed them of M28,000.00. Dissatisfied with the amount, they forced the victims to electronically transfer an additional M10,000.00 into Sekonyela’s bank account, bringing the total stolen to M38,000.00.

Furthermore, Sekonyela illegally searched the female victim, violating the law which strictly prohibits male officers from searching women. He also lent his police combat jacket to his accomplice to falsely imply his friend was an officer. Both men were officially dismissed from the police service on June 9, 2026.
